Junior Secondary refers to the education of students in years 7, 8 and 9. It begins by bridging the gap between primary school and secondary school and ends by preparing students to be successful in senior schooling.

The Junior Secondary Vision at Coolum State High School is:

That students have the confidence, desire and belief to succeed,
through strong foundations in literacy and numeracy.

Success in Junior Secondary comes from engagement in learning and building relationships. The Junior Secondary years at Coolum State High School are built around a caring, supportive environment, enabling students a smooth transition into senior school. Students feel a sense of belonging and certainty in such an environment and strong teacher-student relationships are created.

To enable students to achieve the best possible outcomes, teachers enforce high standards and expectations of behaviour, classwork and uniform. The Australian Curriculum is taught to all students at their level and assessment is well thought out to allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. As well as being rigorous, the curriculum is designed to engage adolescents, to cultivate lifelong learners.

Year 7 and 8

Students in Year 7 and 8 study a set curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, HPE, The Arts, Technologies and Japanese.

The Junior Secondary years at Coolum State High School are about developing excellent foundations for learning and continued success with strong core abilities in reading, writing and numeracy.

To support the building of strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, students have four 70 minute lessons per week of English and Maths. All other subjects have three 70 minute lessons per week.

Year 9

The end of Year 8 marks an important time in the Junior Secondary phase of learning at Coolum State High School. Our Year 8 students will have experienced the full range of our curriculum areas and are now able to preference subjects which position them for success in Year 9. All students study English, Maths, Science, Humanities and HPE. Specific disciplines of the Arts, Technologies and Japanese become elective subjects.
