Diverse Learners

The Diverse Learners department is based at Coolum State High School in the new DBB building. Specialist support staff assist students by:
  • working closely with teachers to develop strategies to support student learning
  • designing individual education programs (enrichment and learning support) to enhance students' learning

  • one-on-one support and monitoring of students’ progress
  • assistance in adjusting and modifying curriculum/assessment
  • supporting classroom learning and implementing differentiation
  • assisting teachers to implement Individual Curriculum Plans (ICPs).
Students experiencing a significant gap between their achievement and their potential ability attract in class support or small group tuition from support teachers and teacher’s aides. Students may be experiencing short or long term difficulties.
A student may exhibit one or more of the following characteristics:
  • significant problems with reading, writing, spelling or numeracy
  • inability to focus and maintain attention
  • visual or auditory perceptual problem
  • a disorder of memory and thinking
  • problems with metacognition ie monitoring and organising their own learning
  • have educational support needs arising from disability.
Student identification is collated from primary schools, teacher observations, class participation, diagnostic testing and school report results.
The Diverse Learners Department offers before school ‘catch-up’ sessions each morning for any student requiring additional support. Sessions take place from 8.00am - 8.30am in DDB1.
