Subjects and Monitoring

​Coolum State High School provides a wide range of subjects for students in Years 7 to 12.  Report Cards are produced at the end of each term.  International students are also offered a weekly (in school time) English as a Second Language (ESL) lesson. 

Additional weekly after school small group tutorials with teachers is offered as a complementary service.   

The school’s Guidance Officers are available to provide subject selection assistance and career advice.

Teachers and ISP staff monitor each international student’s progress and identify support services within the school, assist the student to pass all their subjects.  EQI guidelines for student academic and attendance monitoring as also used and ensure that study visa conditions are adhered to.

Popular subjects for international students include:

  • Geography
  • History (Ancient or Modern)
  • Drama and Music
  • Visual Art and Graphics
  • Legal Studies
  • Physical Education
  • Information Technology
  • Home Economics
  • Sciences (Chemistry, Biology and Physics)

International students are also able to study in some Prevocational Courses and obtain competencies in assessment. These include:

  • Certificate I in Furnishing (woodwork)
  • Certificate II in Business
  • Certificate II in Information, Digital Media and Technology
  • Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation
  • Certificate II in Visual Art
  • Certificate III in Sport and Recreation (not available for Semester 2).

Note:  the above courses can take 1-2 years to complete and obtain the full certificate.  Students studying in shorter periods can undertake study and receive units of competencies.

Academy Programs

The Academy Programs (PDF, 2151KB) encompass Instrumental Music, Cheerleading, Surfing, Touch Football and Basketball and will be led by expertly trained teachers in each field. Every program will provide students with opportunities to experience events, competitions and excursions designed to enhance their skills base, extend their natural talent and inspire them to further success. 

International students who enrol for a one year period (Terms 1- 4) are able to apply for additional school programs.

Every participating student must be an exemplar to the entire schooling body in regards to their very high attendance record, exceptional behaviour, commitment to academic success and our values of Care, Respect and Excellence.

One lesson after school - 3.00pm - 4.30pm

Our schools engages the students in e-learning and requires the use of an electronic device (eg tablets and laptops computers which have Microsoft Windows).  Students may bring to school their own device, which can be linked to the classroom learning resources and access free WIFI at school. 

A limited number of Apple laptop computers is available for hire for the International students, if they are unable to bring their own device. 

School Excursions

Many subjects include school organised excursions which enable the students to go to various locations to enhance their coursework.  These excursions are fully supervised by school teachers and staff. 

School camps are also scheduled throughout the year as part of some school subjects and year level leadership activities.  Weekend camps, for example Fraser Island, may also be organised with the ISP staff. 

Other day trips may include:
  • Australia Zoo (Theme Park with Australian native animals and other world animals)
  • Dreamworld (Theme Park on the Gold Coast)
  • Eumundi Markets (local authentic arts, crafts, food and other merchandise)
  • Art Museums (Brisbane)
  • Brisbane Exhibition (showcasing Queensland produce and agriculture)
  • Point Cartwright Beach area (Biology Studies)
  • University of the Sunshine Coast (Careers Expo and special subjects)
