Schoolies at ABC's and Rice

Year 12 students Savannah Hobson, Lara Carrington and Anaru Burling are foregoing the usual Schoolies celebrations at the end of the year to teach English and other skills to impoverished children in Cambodia.

The three girls will be volunteering at ABC’s and Rice, a non-government, not for profit, school which provides free education, nutrition and health care to the impoverished children of Siem Reap.

When families agree to send their children to school, the family is rewarded with rice to feed their family. The school name reflects its policy of providing destitute villagers with rice so they can send their children to school instead of sending them out to work to support the family.

Lara Carrington has been visiting third world countries with her family since she was seven years old. As a result of her experiences Lara suggested to her friends that they try to do something helpful and yet, still enjoy a holiday after finishing Year 12.

The girls are self funding their trip through their part time employment and donations. They have also been raising money through activities such as markets, garage sales and selling chocolate boxes to donate to ABC’s and Rice.
