Coolum High Students Awarded Scholarships

25/05/2015

Two former Coolum State High School students have been awarded Pearl Duncan Teaching Scholarships to assist them in achieving their dream of becoming teachers.

Emily Billington and Jade Bligh are currently studying a Bachelor of Education at the Sunshine Coast University and will both receive $20,000 to help with the extensive costs involved in completing their degrees.

The scholarships are named in honour of Pearl Duncan, an Aboriginal educator who has dedicated her life to improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in education. They are designed to assist aspiring teachers to also make a difference in education.

In addition to the $20,000 funding assistance, the students will also be offered permanent employment as a teacher in a Queensland state school at the completion of their tertiary studies.

Both students were encouraged to nominate themselves by the High School’s Head of Science, Paul Oslen.

While Jade is happy to be placed anywhere, Emily would like a rural posting to make the most of her cultural heritage.
