This course will be offered to highly motivated, self directed and practically gifted boys and girls, preferably those with a high level of competence in surfing.
In 2008 the course will be offered to Years 8, 9 and 10 students enrolled at Coolum State High School.
It is envisaged that students enrolling in this course will continue with a career in competitive surfing or a career within the surf related industry.
Course Entry:
The course is by application and available to students who can demonstrate:
- the ability or potential to perform at a high standard in surfing; or
- demonstrate the ability or potential to commit to coaching or administrating within the sport of surfing.
Rationale:
Sport plays an important role within the framework of the Australian way of life. Surfing is now very much a part of mainstream Australian Sporting Culture. At present a multimillion dollar world-wide professional surfing circuit exists for both women and men.
Supporting this circuit is a large, diverse and financially viable range of ancillary industries that provide many vocational opportunities.
Through the medium of this course it is expected that many benefits will accrue to prospective students. It is feasible that a career in competitive surfing, surf media, surf wholesaling, retailing, manufacturing or surf administration is within reach of many of our students.
The geographical location of Coolum State High School makes it an ideal location to make available a course for students to prepare themselves, by attaining the skills required to enter into these career paths.
Course Outline:
The practical components of this course will allow students to draw on the expertise of qualified coaches to design an individual program to cater for their needs. Coaching sessions will look at surf analysis with the use of video and other techniques.
The theory will cover areas such as:
- Surf safety
- Contest surfing and preparation
- Surf judging
- Nutrition diet
- Fitness for surfing
- Role of the coach
- Surfboard technology
- Surf related industries
- Resume writing
- Surf media and journalism
Assessment:
Students will be assessed using:
- Practical examinations (demonstration via check list)
- Theoretical examinations
- Assignments
Costs:
The cost of this course will be in the vicinity of $162.00 for Year 8 and $267.00 for Years 9 and 10 for 2008. This fee will provide for the costs of Surfing Australia Coaches, all course material and associated certificates.
