Senior Schooling Phase Print

The mission of Senior Schooling is to develop confident, self-directed, knowledgeable people who are morally and socially responsible, employable, capable of enjoying life and prepared for further learning.

......“The Corporate Vision”, Division of Schools, Department of Education, Queensland.

PREPARING FOR SUCCESS

Success in the senior school stems from:
  • a proven work ethic
  • motivation and commitment to study
  • interest and ability in chosen subjects
  • satisfactory completion of assignment work by the required date
  • a balanced selection of subjects

Successful students:balance commitments to school, work, family and friends

  • plan a work and study program
  • manage their time
  • organise themselves responsibly
  • meet deadlines with assignments and assessment
  •
What commitment is needed?
  • Attend every lesson, every day
  • Study 10-15 hours per week
  • Attend all field trips and excursions
  • Attend all QCS preparation sessions and practice tests. Some of these will be held on the Flexible Learning Day.
  • Use your Flexible Learning Day productively.
  • Work at or above this level ensures success. Any effort below this level is wasted as students will find they are unable to meet course requirements.

COURSES OF STUDY FOR YEARS 11 AND 12
Coolum High School offers Authority Subjects and Authority Registered Subjects. All students in Year 11 must enrol for 6 subjects in each of the four semesters which make up Years 11 and 12. Year 12 students, with special circumstances, may be permitted to drop one subject for Semester 4 after consultation with the Guidance Officer and Principal.

ELIGIBILITY FOR TERTIARY ENTRANCE SCORE (OP)
An Overall Position (OP) is advisable for standard entry into most university courses. To be eligible for an OP, the student must study at least five (5) Authority Subjects throughout Year 11 and 12. At least three (3) Authority Subjects must be studied continuously over four (4) semesters.

All students who wish to gain an OP are required to study 6 Authority Subjects in Year 11 and 12. If a student has a career path identified in their SET Plan which requires an Authority Registered Subject or a Certificate Course they should make application for Special Consideration to the Deputy Principal of the Senior School.

TERTIARY ENTRANCE FOR YEAR 12 STUDENTS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR AN OP
Students who complete Year 12 and receive a Qld Certificate of Education (QCE) but not an OP can apply for tertiary courses through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). They must, however, satisfy any subject prerequisites and course requirements. Most non-OP students who successfully apply for courses through QTAC gain entry to TAFE courses or associate diploma and associate degree courses at some Universities. A very small number of these students gain entry to degree courses. Applicants are selected for tertiary courses in order of merit. Non OP students are given a selection score called a ‘rank’.

ELIGIBILITY FOR TERTIARY ENTRANCE NOT REQUIRED
Students who do not wish to gain an OP may choose a course containing a combination of Authority and Authority Registered Subjects to give a total of six (6) subjects or units being studied in each semester.

COMPULSORY SUBJECTS
English
All students are required to study English or English Communication Studies in Years 11 and 12.
Mathematics
