Classroom Music
During the last four years our classroom music program has grown significantly and is consistently producing young musicians with a comprehensive understanding of the subject and a flair for composition and performance.
Students at Coolum High have the opportunity to study music through Years 8 to 12. This “experience of music” covers all genres – including Classical, Jazz and Rock. Students get involved in analysing existing music as a tool to enhance their own composing and performing skills.
Units include: “Australian Rock”, “Film Music”, “Popular Classics” and “So you want to be a Rock Star!” Whether for career, commercial or leisure activities, students will have the opportunity to gain the basis for a lifelong positive engagement in music.
Instrumental Music
All students in the wind/brass/percussion program are expected to perform in our school band “Fusion”. Fusion performs regularly in the Coolum and Sunshine Coast community at events such as The Noosa Jazz Festival and the Uniting Church Fete. The band also performs for our own school community at school assemblies, at music evenings, Arts Expo, musicals and Awards Night.
Every year the band tours locally to entertain primary schools as well as it’s biennial band tour to destinations like the Gold Coast, Hervey Bay and Cairns.
Aims:
- To provide the opportunity to learn a musical instrument:
Strings - Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass Woodwind - Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone Brass - Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, Tuba, French Horn Percussion - drumming and mallet skills
- To provide ensemble experience for students
- To provide an extra dimension to a school music program
Vocal Ensemble
Our Vocal Ensemble comprises between 6 to 10 female singers from Years 8 to 12.
Students receive guidance in vocal technique, microphone use and stage craft whilst performing a repertoire across Jazz, Rock and Pop genres.
Students perform at school assemblies, at local Sunshine Coast venues, our school Arts Expo and Awards Night.
Rock Band
This ensemble caters for students who are interested in a more contemporary music style and instrumentation. Membership in this band involves an audition and an ongoing commitment to rehearsals and performances.
Performance opportunities will include lunch time concerts, school assemblies, Arts Expo and local Sunshine Coast Battle of the Bands competitions.
School Musical Productions
Coolum’s extremely successful musicals give students the opportunity to display a wide range of skills and abilities.
Whether it be acting, singing or playing in the band, this biennial event is open to all students.
Recent shows have included: “Little Shop of Horrors”, “Back to the ‘80’s” and “Disco Inferno”.
